A Must Have Resource

I just received the Comic Buyer's Guide Standard Catalog of Comic Books. This years edition is HUGE! I don't know how they'll keep up in future years. This edition is, once again, outstanding.

I consider this a must have book for any serious comic book buyer or seller!

I'm going to give you a few quick reasons why this is such an important resource.

  1. Contains all information about artists, writers, first appearances and other events.

  2. Contains CGC census information up to the publication date (very important!)

  3. Has price data from actual auctions, by grade with high, low and average prices.

  4. Has circulation numbers for thousands of the comics in the guide (you know what I think about the numbers!)

Once again, the folks over at CBG have put out an amazing product. This is a must have resource for your buying and selling research. I especially recommend it for researching the next picks for your collection.

Below I've included a link from Amazon, you can get the book new for a significant discount off of it's $34.99 retail price.

Back Issues of Interest

Back Issues

This month I want to look at four back-issue/new-issue tie-ins. This play ends up being very similar to comic book movie releases. The four titles/characters I'm watching are Red Sonja, Spider-woman, Moon Knight and Jonah Hex.

The new Red Sonja series has been very popular. It was released on the heels of the successful Dark Horse relaunch of Conan. I think the new ongoing Red Sonja series may be overdone now (see looking ahead), but there is increasing interest in the 1970's Marvel Series. This may not be an explosive gain, but it is increasing demand which leads to higher sales prices than would otherwise be realized. Look at the sales prices for Red Sonja #1 below.

Conan #23 (1st Red Sonja)

Red Sonja #1 CGC 9.6

The next character is Spider-woman. Marvel has a couple of projects featuring this character in the works. First out of the blocks is the Spider-woman:Origin mini-series written by Brian Michael Bendis. I'm sure orders will be heavy. At the end of 2006 Bendis and artist Alex Maleev will start a spy series featuring Spider-woman. It's time to pick up/start watching the prices for Marvel Spotlight #32.

Next is Moon Knight. There has been a lot of press about this character lately, and even some movie rumours. There will be a mini-series released sometime next year. Buy/watch Werewolf by Night #32, Marvel Spotlight #28 and Moon Knight #1.

Finally we have Jonah Hex. The issue to watch is All-Star Western #10 (already in the Bronze Age Watchlist). The HBO ongoing series "Deadwood" has been a success and on the heels of this success DC has launched Loveless and now a new Jonah Hex series. While I'm not too hot on any comic series relaunch, I do like what this attention could do to this Bronze Age Key.
